The Value of Community

At the MAD Academy, we educate the whole student. As part of our mission, we strive to bring our students together outside the classroom to connect to and build bonds with each other and their broader communities. Through our grade-level trips and annual Mexico service trip, we aim to both to broaden and sharpen our student’s respective lenses. Our students also apply the media skills they learn at the MAD Academy when doing volunteer work in our local, non-profit community.

Mexico Service Trip

The MAD Community Service Trip has been described by students as “life changing” and that it “opened their eyes” to how some people in this world live. The families that receive homes have their lives transformed through being provided the basic need of shelter.  Students will receive community service hours for attending but they also gain so much more.  Students (and many parent volunteers) come home with a better appreciation for the life they have in Santa Barbara. Watch a student made video here that reflects on the experience as well as some local news coverage here of our most recent service trip.

Class Trips

The Freshman Retreat is a two-day team building retreat for all new Freshman MAD students. It is designed to build a strong sense of community as they begin their four years in MAD. Students participate in low ropes and team building activities, emotional intelligence training, lots of fun and games, and campfire stories. The Sophomore Retreat is a three-day retreat that continues the students efforts of team building. It is designed to continue to build a strong sense of community and take the discussions on emotional intelligence further. This trip takes places at a location with snow, taking many of our students out of their typical comfort zone. The Junior Boat Trip is a chance for students to explore what’s just beyond their own front door: the Channel Islands and the Pacific Ocean. Along with their Environmental Science and Marine Biology teachers, students explore and experience this ecosystem with a new perspective. The Senior trip is always tbd and subject to a vote from the senior class. The senior trip allows the seniors to reflect on their four year journey together and appreciate the friendships created.

Non Profit Student Work

Many MAD students leverage their newly acquired media skills to intern at local Santa Barbara based non profits and help these meaningful causes highlight their great work. Organizations recent MAD students have assisted include the Dream Foundation, the Special Olympics, Unity Shoppe, Lotusland, Planned Parenthood and the Santa Barbara Soup Kitchen. MAD students also have the opportunity to work with select non-profits as part of their curriculum. These non profit organizations send representatives to MAD each week to work with a team of students on social media, marketing, fundraising and other projects that support the organization. This “in-house” internship opportunity benefits our students as well as our community.
