The Multimedia Arts & Design Academy at Santa Barbara High School believes that both students and the community benefit from students' involvement in real-world experiences in multimedia arts. The California Partnership Academy guidelines also require participation in community service and internships in the area of the academy's focus: multimedia technologies including digital video, digital imaging, animation, and web-site management and design. The Academy actively supports and follows this guideline.
Mentorships
The Academy is developing a community network of local people experienced in video, digital imaging, computer design, web-site design and management, who are willing to devote a few hours per month to teach, guide, and counsel students interested in their areas of expertise. The mentor/student relationship is one of the most effective methods of introducing our students to these rapidly developing businesses. It is rewarding for both mentor and student.
Internships
Academy students are placed in internships with local multimedia companies, organizations and businesses. These students bring with them their Academy training, eagerness to learn, enthusiasm and energy. The business discovers the well-trained talent they need, while the student gains real-world experience. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or in accepting an intern at your business, please call the career center at Santa Barbara High School (805) 966-9101 ext 225.
Objective
The objective of the internship program is to expose students to a broad range of career choices while helping them develop the skills necessary for a future in the labor market. The Multimedia Arts and Design Academy is seeking to place high school students into internships and job shadowing experiences. We are committed to preparing our students for high-tech work opportunities in the 21st Century. As seniors, Academy students are expected to spend a minimum of ninety hours in a job or internship who's purpose is to broaded their education expierence and allow them real-world experiece.
Participate
Academy students who seek internships have a variety of skills and interests and are interested in expanding them in the workplace. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and have varying interests and qualifications. The experience our students receive by participating in work-based learning is invaluable and many of them are hired after completing their internships. We ask that our interns be provided an on-site supervisor that is responsible for the direction of the student's day to day activities. Internships can be paid or unpaid and the time commitment by employers varies.
By providing an internship, you the employer, will be enhancing the education of students in our community and preparing our future workers for the challenges of the 21st century. If you are interested in placing a student at your business, or would like additional information on our internship/job shadow program please contact the SBHS Career Center at 966-9101, ext. 225
