Summer Film Camp
Summer 2018 was no time for relaxing in the warm Santa Barbara sunshine as the Multimedia Arts & Design Academy(MAD) at Santa Barbara High School hosted its inaugural film camp, Through the Lens.
Designed by MAD alumna Grace Burford, the camp introduced 12-15 year old students to the exciting and fast paced atmosphere of film production. With attendees coming from 8 Santa Barbara area schools, Through the Lens was also an opportunity for students to interact with and learn about peers from other areas of the city. The diverse group of students spent 5 hours a day, in 2 two week sessions, learning about various aspects of motion pictures including script writing, lighting techniques, camera operation, sound and film editing, and acting.
When asked what he most enjoyed about attending Through the Lens, student Blake X said, “My favorite day was definitely the second day of filming the School of Rock scene because I got to operate the camera and direct which are my two favorite jobs … we got to edit our Ferris Bueller scene which was also a lot of fun”.”**
The state of the art facilities at the MAD Academy provided a welcoming and inspiring backdrop for students to explore their passion for film and media while at the same time providing an amazing summer experience.
“Through the hard work and efforts of parents, administrators, students, and community supporters we have been able to create a learning center that is truly inspiring. It’s remarkable to have such incredible resources available to students at such an influential time in their education. A huge thank you to everyone that has been a part of creating these opportunities for our local students” said Pablo Sweeney, Operations Director at the MAD Academy.
Entering its 22nd year the MAD Academy is a distinctive educational community within Santa Barbara High School. It prepares its students for college and the workplace by providing both traditional and interdisciplinary project-based learning in the evolving field of media arts and technology.
